Spiritual Obesity In The Church

The annual America’s Health Rankings list is out and it’s scary.

Some states faired better than others, but regardless, obesity stands as a killer. Obesity alone is the leading cause of preventable death and costs our nation about $200 billion each year. More than 66 million adults are obese – that’s more than one in four Americans.

Imagine This headline…

Spiritual Obesity of the church alone is the leading cause of preventable deaths outside the church.

If we’re honest with ourselves, it’s been a while since we last had a meaningful conversation with someone about Christ, The Cross, and the Gospel. Time for many of us to turn off the reality/drama TV, get off the couch of apathy, and get on the treadmill; start running the race as to win.

1 Corinthians 9:24

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.

Jane Pennington, spokesperson from the United Health Foundation, had this to say about the lifestyles and health of Americans:

“It is important to note that we are living longer, but not necessarily better.”

The same goes for believers. You may be a member of an awesome church, sitting under a great man of God that brings the heat every Sunday. But if all we do is come to church on Sunday, sit, attend, and go home, all we’ve accomplished is taking in another spiritual helping that will go right to our thighs.

Get up. Run the race. Share the Gospel.
